That is about the best conclusion to a Cubs/Cardinals series that I could imagine. Rizzo's game and series-winning homer could only have been better if it had landed on Ryan Dempster's windshield.
Of course, it didn't begin so cheerfully on Friday. We now have official worry about Travis Wood's continued performance. The 5 home runs in 5 innings is a troublesome stat. More troubling: in the last three starts (all losses), Wood hasn't lasted past 6 innings. Moreover, he hasn't given up fewer than 7 runs. Hopefully he pulls it together in his next start. Then we'll have TWO Samardzijas! (shudder)
- It's looking more and more like we're getting jack shit from the trade deadline. Dempster, fearful of renting an apartment in Atlanta for three months, has completely fucked the deal with the Braves. Garza's missed a start and educated us all in the finer points of tricep fluid MRIs. No one said it was going to be easy - save for the meatheads on the call-in shows who think that the Cubs are contenders.
- Castro has a fairly solid weekend, going 5-13 and scoring at least one run each game. Average is still only at .281, but I'm happy with progress.
- Paul Maholm has a WHIP of 0.97 over the past month. Holy. Shit.
