With a mid-thought "oh, shit," Dempster realizes that the Braves play in the state of Georgia
The long-rumored trade of soon-to-be free agent Ryan Dempster has finally been consummated. The sexy consensual partner in this case is Atlanta, a team 3.5 games back of Washington, and one in great need of pitching. In return, the Cubs get Randall Delgado, a 22 year old right hander, and one of the top three prospects in the Braves organization. In 126 total big league games, Delgado has a 5-10 record, an ERA just under 4.00, and a WHIP of 1.374. As with all of Atlanta's pitching prospects, there's been some regression this year. But honestly, throwing a top-rated pitcher into a system desperately in need of serious arms is an amazing return for a guy who was most likely going to end up elsewhere after the 2012 season.
Even independent of results, this is the second stunning trade return pulled off by Hoyer and Epstein since taking charge. We flipped a reliever with arm problems for Anthony Rizzo, who has not only hit the ball, but multiplied loaves and fishes. Now we're getting a 22 year old pitching prospect for a half-year rental of a 36 year old pitcher. Fuck and yes.
