The 2011 Cubs season is over - at least as far as Wrigley Field is involved. Three more in San Diego and we're going to be done for the season. The weekend's series loss to the Cardinals topped off a season that we declared couldn't go worse then 2010, then did so decisively. We've got 2 more losses than last year with 3 games left. Can't imagine why the GM lost his gig.
At the very least, we can point to this year as the one where it became apparently to even the most dense (see: Ricketts, Tom) Cub followers that shouldn't just probably change, it HAD to fucking change. Rock bottom, not three years after boasting the best offense in the National League.
So the changes started with Kosuke, and they'll likely continue into the offseason. No way the club's picking up Aramis's $16M option, and he'll likely get more money somewhere else. Carlos Pena could be back, because we've got fuck-all for first base prospects, but who knows how that will play out? Zambrano is way out the door. And while I've always defended him in the past, he's never hit that elite level we pay him for, and I'm sick of hearing about it every time he blows up. I guess it's worth nothing in all this that the one guy we'd like to see gone - Soriano - remains undealable for another couple of years. That is one awful fucking contract. Quade is probably gone for the next GM's pick, and I'm fine with that. He's shown himself to be a capable coach, and a mediocre manager. We're not losing anything with him out the door. Hopefully the next regime builds the beginning of a contending roster. I don't mind if they start slow. Trying to do it all at once is what got us into this mess in the first place.
So let's enjoy these last three games. We bitch now, but we'll be missing baseball in mere weeks. Although we might be able to hold that off to months if we think about Casey Coleman hard enough.
