Poll Results: A Big 2009 For Malibu Mike

He didn't need to jump, but wanted his hair to blow gracefully in the breeze. You know, for the ladies.

You've spoken, and for once I'm in full agreement with the poll. After sizing up the potential of each of our promising young players - or maybe just judging on hair sexiness - you've anointed Malibu Mike Fontenot as the Cub best poised for a breakout 2009. What's really surprising is that one of you took the Felix Pie bait once again. I mean, have we learned nothing?

Mike Fontenot contemplates getting older, high school girls staying the same age

The choice of Malibu is one that WAIW whole-heartedly agrees with, especially after perusing the man's stats. In 119 games (up from 86 in 2007), he's markedly improved his stats with about the same number of at bats. Poorly-formatted chart AWAY! :

Year Ag Tm Lg G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG *OPS+ TB SH SF IBB HBP GDP
 2007 27 CHC NL 86 234 32 65 12 4 3 29 5 4 22 43 .278 .336 .402 87 94 1 3 0 0 5
2008 28 CHC NL 119 243 42 74 22 1 9 40 2 0 34 51 .305 .395 .514 133 125 3 1 2 3 1

The increase in both power and average shows a player clearly on the upswing, plus he's bitchin' cool. His hitting is the nice surprise everyone forgot in their pissedness at K-Fuk and their ecstacy at Geo being everything promised. He wasn't very good in the first half of the year, but from July on, he was an unrepentant monster at the plate, hitting .366 in September and October.

Here's the thing, though. We've now got four middle infielders and two spots to play them. DeRo has a great bat but questionable fielding skills - and we're not sure he can keep having career years. The Riot hits for average but isn't anything special in the field and can't buy an extra base hit. Ronny Cedeno has a cannon arm and a .252 career average. Malibu Mike is getting better every year, but can't play shortstop and may prove to be sweet trade bait. It's like some sort of fucked-up logic puzzle. All we know is that we're in favor of anything that gets Malibu playing time on the regular. If he stops punching the clock in east Lakeview any time soon, we're gonna be pissed.

Malibu Mike is bitchin' cool. I would hate to Riot or DeRo leave though. They're hot, and you know, that's really important to a baseball team.
