Reds 2 - Cubs 1: Lilly Great, Offense Bad ... Whaaaaa?

. Thursday, August 21, 2008

"I should have given up 4 homers - then we would win."

Ted Lilly only gave up 2 hits and 2 walks yesterday ... and we lost. In a complete 180 from his outing last week against the Braves, where the offense bailed his ass out for the win, Lilly pitched almost well enough to win the game by himself. Unfortunately, he also lost the game for himself in familiar Lillian fashion ... I think we have a new nickname for Ted. As much as we like to rag on the guy, you can't really fault a 2-hit performance. Soriano and Theriot missed a playable fly ball that turned into a double, and we got to see the ever-rare 3rd strike wild pitch.

Mark DeRosa was the only one holding the bat by the correct end last night

Against the Reds at home, Lilly's game last night should be enough to win. Except everyone decided to slump at once, with only Ramirez (1) and DeRosa (2) getting any hits at all. Bronson Arroyo came into our famed hitter's park at 10-10 with a 5-plus ERA. He left looking like the reincarnation of Sandy fucking Koufax. Last night's offensive display was pathetic, but Lou still only used one pinch hitter all game, and that was for Ted. I guess he figured this many stars couldn't keep flailing at a pitcher as pathetic as Bronson Arroyo. He figured wrong.

Today Big Z faces off against Josh Fogg (2-5, 7.71). Given that matchup, I'd usually say there's a great shot a victory. After last night, I'll just shut up and tune in.
